Full Swing Concepts:

The full swing has 120 variables.  That's right, 120 different things that must happen in order for the swing to function correctly.  While my intention is to teach all 120 variable to each student; I know that it is not possible for the average student to retain that much information, especially at once.  The good news is that if a student is taught properly from the start the variables shrink down to about 40.  The bad news is that most students are self-taught.  They pick things up in magazines, from friends and family, and more recently web sites.  Not this one though! :)

Most of the students I teach come to me with all kinds of preconceived ideas of what the swing is supposed to be.  They ask questions like "Should I be a one or two planed swinger?" or "Do I create torque in my backswing?  These kinds of questions are very common.  After hearing a question like that I know that my communication skills will be tested.

One of the benefits of teaching junior golfers is the idea of having a soft piece of clay to mold into whatever shape you desire.  Juniors generally will learn at a much faster pace, but their retention rate is not so good.  Juniors need constant reinforcement.

Adults on the other hand are similar to concrete.  You must beat an idea into their heads to get them to change.  Most of the time an adult has to unlearn something before they can learn something new.  That means two steps back before the student can start seeing some progress.  That is why many golfers never improve.  They start taking a couple of steps back and they revert to their old habits.  They might gain a couple of strokes, but they are right back to where they started.  No improvement; just status quo.  In order to improve in this very demanding game, the golfer must be willing to change.  Change comes from doing things differently than previously thought possible.

Change #1     The student must be willing to work on their game.

Change #2      The student must be willing to try new things.

Change #3      The student must be able to handle hitting bad shots.

These three changes are monumentally important in creating an atmosphere of success.

My swing theory is divided into many steps.  To be exact there are seven steps of the swing.

Step #1  Setup

Step #2  Backswing

Step #3  Set and Shoulder rotation

Step #4  Transition

Step #5  Impact

Step #6  Extension

Step #7  Finish
